Why Curing Matters
After pre-expansion, EPS beads retain pentane gas and have unstable internal pressure. Curing (also called aging or stabilization) allows the beads to reach equilibrium with atmospheric conditions over a period typically ranging from 6 to 24 hours.
Properly cured beads fuse more uniformly during molding, produce stronger finished products, and exhibit better dimensional stability. Skipping or shortening the curing period leads to weak bonding, surface defects, and higher scrap rates in subsequent molding stages.
Silo Configurations
Eprotech curing silos are available in three automation levels:
Manual: Operator-controlled filling and discharge. Suited to smaller operations or situations where manual scheduling flexibility is preferred.
Semi-automatic: Automated filling with operator-initiated discharge. Provides a balance between automation and hands-on control.
Fully automatic: Integrated with the production line PLC for automated filling, timed curing, and automatic discharge to the molding system. Required for high-volume continuous operations.
Construction
All silos are made from antistatic synthetic fabric, preventing static charge buildup that can affect bead handling. The design ensures effective pentane release and adequate ventilation during the curing period.
Sizes range from 1.5 m³ (53 ft³) for small-scale or specialty production up to 150 m³ (5,300 ft³) for large industrial plants. Both virgin pre-expanded beads and recycled EPS material can be cured in these silos.
